For nearly 50 years, the Apprenticeship in Ecological Horticulture at the University of California, Santa Cruz has been the training ground for new organic farmers and gardeners.
With support from the UNFI Foundation, the 2014 Apprenticeship program trained 39 first-year apprentices and 8 second-year apprentices in a range of organic gardening and small-scale farming skills, including soil management, composting, pest and weed control, crop planning, irrigation, farm equipment, and social and environmental issues in the food system.
The Center for Agroecology & Sustainable Food Systems (CASFS) members also expanded the program’s work with UCSC undergraduates, who took part in new hands-on internships and classes based at the UCSC Farm. Watch a video of the Farm-to-College project.
